Cortisol is a stress hormone with a legitimate function. It helps you mobilize energy, stay alert, and respond to physical demands. The problem is that it is also catabolic, meaning elevated cortisol breaks down tissue rather than building it. When cortisol stays elevated overnight, it directly competes with the anabolic processes your body is trying to run during sleep.

For the athlete who has worked a full day before training, cortisol has usually been elevated since morning. Work stress, traffic, difficult conversations, and decision fatigue all trigger cortisol.
